If the idea of a musical about the Royal family sounds laughable, it is — but not entirely in a bad way. Certainly, the opening is a bit sappy, showing Diana as a child singing about finding her fairy tale prince, a future she has conjured up from the pages of her favourite Barbara Cartland novels Cartland would, of course, end up becoming Diana's step-grandmother and her appearance later in the show, played by the same actress who takes on the role of the Queen, Judy Kaye, is a scene-stealer. When James Hewitt is introduced, he appears as a well-muscled hunk wearing nothing more than a tiny pair of swimming trunks, to a chorus of "Here comes James Hewitt! T he second half of the show is stronger than the first, which starts to drag by the end, with two particularly memorable numbers. Writer Joe DiPietro has hinted that the creative team are on the hunt for a fresh and young powerhouse.
